Grandma's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Grandma's Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 from 1 vote
These Grandma's Chocolate Chip Cookies are soft in the center, lightly golden around the edges, and packed with semi-sweet chocolate chips. Made with simple pantry ingredients, they are easy enough for a weekday bake and comforting enough for a family dessert. For a warm summer kitchen, chilling the dough for 20–30 minutes can make it easier to scoop and bake.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Electric hand mixer or stand mixer
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Whisk
  • Rubber spatula
  • Cookie scoop or tablespoon
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Cooling rack

Method

  1. Cream the butter and sugars: Add the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar to a large bowl. Beat until the mixture is light, creamy, and smooth.
  2. Add the eggs and vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and mix until evenly combined.
  3. Mix the dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Combine the dough: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture. Mix just until the flour disappears. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chips: Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips and gently fold them through the dough so they are evenly distributed.
  6. Chill if needed: If the dough feels unusually soft or sticky, chill it for 20–30 minutes before baking. This can make the dough easier to scoop and handle.
  7. Prepare the baking sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Scoop the dough into roughly equal portions, leaving enough space between cookies for them to spread.
  8. Bake the cookies: Bake at 350°F for 9–12 minutes, watching the edges closely. The edges should be lightly golden while the centers can still look slightly soft.
  9. Let the cookies rest: Leave the baked cookies on the hot baking sheet for about 5 minutes. They will continue setting during this short cooling period.
  10. Cool completely: Transfer the cookies to a cooling rack and allow them to cool before serving.

Notes

  • For soft cookies: Do not overbake. The centers should still look slightly soft when the cookies come out of the oven.
  • For even cookies: Scoop similar amounts of dough so the cookies finish baking at about the same time.
  • Butter matters: Use softened butter rather than melted butter for the intended dough texture.
  • Flour: Measure carefully and avoid adding extra flour, which can make the cookies dry.
  • Chocolate chips: Semi-sweet chips work well, but milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips can also be used.
  • Summer baking: For Grandma's Chocolate Chip Cookies in summer, chill the dough for 20–30 minutes if your kitchen is warm and the dough becomes too soft.
  • Storage: Keep completely cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature.
  • Freezing: Freeze portioned cookie dough or fully cooled baked cookies in an airtight freezer-safe container or bag.
  • Texture after cooling: Cookies may become slightly firmer as they cool, so judge the final texture after they have rested rather than immediately after baking.

Serving Tip

Serve Grandma's Chocolate Chip Cookies slightly warm with a glass of milk, coffee, or your favorite cold summer drink. A short warm-up can also bring back a softer texture in stored cookies.
